When The Ballad Of Reading Gaol was first published Wilde found it necessary to use a pseudonym. Public outrage and ridicule directed at proven homosexuals was no small matter at the time. The name Wilde chose C. 3. 3. is most interesting because it referred to his location at the prison. He was in “C” wing, on the 3rd floor and in cell number 3. It was after Wildes death that Wilde’s name was attached to the poem.
