In recent years testing of the remaining strands of Beethoven’s hair has revealed high concentrations of lead and the suggestion that this explains Beethovens tragic character traits. It is not known how high levels of lead would be in his body. It is true that some of the symptoms of lead poisoning are iritability and mood swings both of which are very characteristic of Beethoven and the lead may have made other problems worse. On the other hand, lead poisoning of that severity has other symptoms which are not so noticeable in Beethoven. Things like impaired learning ability, inability to concentrate, lack of appetite, and so on. There is also the issue of the accuracy of tests on such old strands of hair and the actual lead levels are yet to be confirmed by further testing. For the time being the lead poisoning theory remains unproven.
