The Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood Boulevard was just 2 years old in 1929 when the first Academy Awards were held as part of a private dinner in the Blossom Ballroom on May 16th 1929.
The first awards are unique for several reasons. They were the shortest, lasting just 15 minutes. They are the only Academy Awards not to be broadcast, and most significantly, they are the only Academy Awards to give Oscar’s to silent films. Of course they weren’t called Oscars yet. Bette Davis said she named them Oscars after her husband. That was in 1936. There are other claimants for the origin of the name, but Davis’s story seems the most plausible.
