Culture Review 2007: Gaming Consoles.
2007 was the first year in which all 3 new generation gaming consoles were available. The Wii maintained a strong leadership in sales as people discovered the fun of physically swinging the Wiimote when playing games. Being the least expensive of the big 3 consoles contributed to its runaway success. Sony, meanwhile, had to suffer the indignity of finding the superceeded PlayStation2 outselling their new PS3. The newest Playstation, while starting slowly is establishing itself at the center of many home entertainment systems. Its built-in high definition player has been central to Sony’s ambition to become the established HD format of the future. The strategy made the games consoles expensive and initially slow selling, but as prices come down the PS3 is gaining market share and Blu Ray discs are outselling its rival 2 to 1.
