Culture Review 2007: YouTube Elections.
2007 was the first time that web 2.0 started to have major changes in society. While everyone talks about personal relationships on social networking sites in 2007 elections around the world were being influenced by MySpace and YouTube campaigns. In Australia opposition leader Kevin Rudd used the new medium deftly, quickly becoming the most clicked on politician in the country. At the same time the incumbent government of John Howard proved inept in the digital world and were soon left behind on the net as well as at the polls. Although it is difficult to quantify the exact contribution of the YouTube phenomenon on the election results it is clear that social networking sites were a significant part of Rudd’s victory. In the US where the Presidential election is still in its early stages a similar effect is becoming apparent in the way politicians interact with their constituencies.
