Pronounced "Gatherer", but, hey, it's web 2.0 and we leave the last
"e" out right? Gatherr collects the best of this and that from here and
there on the web for no other reason than sharing. It's about stuff
that seemed interesting at the time. Enjoy.
ABOUT
My
name is Tony Johansen. I am an artist. I like art and science and
poetry and books and history and technology and lots more besides.
Every day I am excited by the marvelous things I see in this wonderful
world and beyond. I love the Internet for giving me access to so much.
I am like a sponge for wondrous things or things that make me wonder. This site is really just a
scrapbook. Being on the web, however, means being able to share the
treasures I find. That's me, Tony Johansen, artist who likes to share
my excitement of being alive.

Hitler addresses a crowd of 200,000 who came out to greet him as he arrived in Vienna. Within hours the purging of Jews had begun, partly by the Nazis themselves but also by Austrians who could finally release all their hatreds and bigotry against their fellow citizens.
It is easy to assume that the Nazi takeover of Austria was generally brutal but it was not - so long as you were not Jewish. As Hitlers troops crossed the border women ran into the street crying to welcome them. These tears in this photograph are real tears of joy that at last the dream of uniting the German speaking peoples was happening. Austria was militarily occupied without a shot being fired.
This is the 12th Real Refuses exhibition. Started in 1997 by Tony Johansen it has always been regarded as “the democratic Archibald”. The Archibald Prize is the biggest prize in Australasia for portraiture. Winning the prize brings fame and money but like the Salon in Paris it is regarded by artist’s as a closed ecosystem of favoratism and famous names. The Real Refuses represents all those struggling artists who have been rejected by the establishment for the official prize. No artist is ever rejected by the Real Refuses. It is about inclusiveness and giving all artists a chance. The first year people said it could never work, yet now, 12 years later, it is a respected part of the Archibald circus. Oh, the establishment likes to pretend we don’t exist, but the artists have embraced us and enjoy the empowerment that our simple exhibition offers.
The winner of the People’s Choice award was the artwork but in particular this wonderful sculptural work.
