Pronounced "Gatherer", but, hey, it's web 2.0 and we leave the last
"e" out right? Gatherr collects the best of this and that from here and
there on the web for no other reason than sharing. It's about stuff
that seemed interesting at the time. Enjoy.
ABOUT
My
name is Tony Johansen. I am an artist. I like art and science and
poetry and books and history and technology and lots more besides.
Every day I am excited by the marvelous things I see in this wonderful
world and beyond. I love the Internet for giving me access to so much.
I am like a sponge for wondrous things or things that make me wonder. This site is really just a
scrapbook. Being on the web, however, means being able to share the
treasures I find. That's me, Tony Johansen, artist who likes to share
my excitement of being alive.

“The most experienced astronaut was designated commander, in charge of all aspects of the mission including flying the lunar module. Prudent thinking suggested that the next most experienced crew member be assigned to take care of the command module since it had a heat shield and was our only way back home. This left the least experienced to accompany the commander. Pete Conrad had flown two Gemini flights, the second with Dick Gordon as his crew mate. I had not flown at all.
Dick was the more experienced astronaut, yet I got the prize assignment. In the three years of training preceding our mission, he never once said: “It’s not fair, I wish I could walk on the Moon too.” I do not have his unwavering discipline or strength of character.”

Back in 2002 Newsweek put Steve Jobs with one of the first iPods onto their front cover with the words “iPod Therefore iAm”. Back then CD’s were king and nobody except SJ thought that that would change any time soon. There had been several other MP3 Players but none had made a dent in traditional music distribution and indie artists still struggled to be heard. Now, almost 6 years later Steve Jobs (love him or hate him) has taken the music world by storm, changed the way people listen to music, and along the way changed the way artists interact with their audience. In the digital world artists don’t need arrogant record company’s to find an audience any more. With the news this week that iTunes has now overtaken WalMart to become the largest retailer of music in the US (read: biggest in the world) I figured it was time to put a crown on that cover picture of Steve and his iPod. Back then almost no one would have predicted that an electronic device could change culture and that one day a blog would say the iPod is King. Long live the King!
YouTube is a video sharing site. Because of YouTube literally millions of artists are able to be seen and to free themselves from the shackles of control by the record labels. Yet in the name of “protection” against ideas from outside more and more countries are joining Iran in trying to prevent their citizens watching YouTube content, or using the blackmail of temporary bans to force YouTube to remove content. YouTube is exposing the black side of humanity at the same time it shines a light on artistic endeavor.
IRAN
Iran considers much of Western culture decadent and immoral and “protects” its citizens by not allowing them to decide for themselves.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE)
Like Iran they have a permanent and total ban on YouTube.
The red colored countries/state have banned YouTube permanently or temporarily. The grey countries have threatened to ban it (and China attempted a partial ban recently.
